Self-Reflection Essay

When it came to the creation aspect of my work, I always made pieces I was comfortable with and stuff that applied to my everyday life.  Some of these pieces include when I talk about soccer, my mom, vacation, and things like that.  I also created things that aren’t as related to me, but I felt as though was an interesting element to touch base on.  This includes my piece talking about the point of view of a tiger, as well as my piece that talks about depression.  With the revision process though, I took the feedback that was given to me with open arms and applied the changes that my peers felt needed to happen in my work.  It could be as simple as grammar mistakes, and it could also be as big as sentence reorganization or sentence structure.  I always want to make my pieces as good an entertaining as possible, so any critiquing I can do towards my work is all the better.

Ultimately my theme is either a happy ending or a bad situation that gets turned around into a more positive outlook of things.  I have an occasional piece or two that may not follow this sort of theme, but for the most part I stay positive and laid back with my approach to all my work.  This is because I generally like to think I am a positive guy, so positive outlooks and things of that nature are what I like to focus on and express.

I think the element of literature that I experimented the most with in my work was poetry.  I wasn’t much of a poetry guy going into this course, and I would say that I am still not much of a poetry guy.  I feel my best work is in other forms besides this, but it was also something I wanted to improve and expand on because I felt as though it would be fun and interesting if I was able to get a grasp of some poetry in my arsenal.  Poetry was where I had my most variety in work as well, going from the super positives to the depressing.

It wasn’t an easy process coming up with these pieces created.  It caused me to think outside of my normal writing comfort zone, as I am normally a person who writes straight forward informational essays instead of stories and poetry.  I feel as though I am a decent writer in that regard, but I can never claim to be a great creative writer.  Since beginning this class though, I have become better creative writer and have become more comfortable with it.  I would definitely say that my fiction pieces were definitely the most fun to create since I like creating my own stories on the fly like I did in this course.  Some new things I’d like to incorporate in my writing after the term has ended is this creative style that I have incorporated in the class and apply it to more pieces.  I have never been much of a creative writer, but this class has helped me at least sort of become one.  I hope that you will be able to see my growth through this portfolio.  Thank you for taking time to review, and any feedback is welcome.
